Power-packed Youth: Media Connect

Over the past few decades, there have been several thousand studies about the effects of media on youth. And yet, somewhat paradoxically, we still have much to learn. In part, the gaps in our knowledge are due to dramatic changes in young people’s media use. In the 1990s, children and teens spent on average four hours a day with media; these estimates have now skyrocketed to an average of six hours (for children) and nine hours a day for adults. As a matter of fact, today’s children and teens spend more time with media than they do at school. And indeed, some of us are less concerned about what youth are learning in school than about what they are picking up from their many hours with all those screens. Along with the significant growth in media use, the gaps in our knowledge are caused by the sweeping and rapid changes in the media landscape. New media technologies are developing and replacing one another at a dramatic pace transforming youth into power-packed entities.

Vanessa Bolognan - The young speaker was convinced that the youth are going to participate much more in their future than their preceding generations. She cites the fact that more young people are participating in voting and in politics and actively are seeking a future for themselves. She also spoke of how most of the latest protest movements are borne out of the internet which serves to galvanise individuals and contributes directly to their activity.

Rashi Choudhary - The young speaker started by stating how the media is becoming more powerful than before. She then goes on to elaborate that since the youth have grown up with such a tool as the internet, the media, information and consequently the future is firmly in the hands of the youth whose participation is also vastly increased due to social media. Simply a hashtag can become a ral;lying point for a movement.

Ria Shah - The young speaker began by elaborating on how information input via the internet is so tremendous that there seems to be no limit to what we can achieve. She states that when she herself was younger all problems seemed larger than life and impossible to solve. However, the internet allows so many interactions that even the most difficult of problems have a solution to them. She claimed multiple examples to prove her thoughts.

Tripti Tyagi - The young speaker began by stating how much of the youth communicate with each other over their mobile phone and through various social channels. She also believes that this can become a powerful tool in the hands of the youth as important information pertaining to health and safety can be easily disseminated on this platform. She also claimed that we must be aware of the difference between reality and fiction, especially in the light of us spending so much of our time online.
